Avago Technologies has rolled out three high-speed optocouplers that offer robust electrical signal isolation for Intelligent Power Module (IPM) interface applications. The ACPL-x484 optocouplers operate at 10MBd, doubling the speed of existing IPM optocouplers for more efficient performance, claimed the company.

The devices are available in three different compact packages that reduce PCB space. They also address IPM interfaces in AC and brushless DC motor drives, industrial inverters, air conditioners, renewable energy inverters, sewing machines and switching power supplies, as well as gate drive applications, general digital isolation and other white goods.


The ACPL-x484 optocouplers prevent erroneous driving of an IPM.

With high common-mode rejection (CMR) of 30kV/?s, the ACPL-x484 optocouplers prevent erroneous driving of an IPM and provide reliable operation in noisy environments. The devices offer fast switching with short propagation delays of 100ns, resulting in reduced dead time, as well as improved efficiency and precision of motion, said Avago. The optocouplers feature a wide supply voltage range from 4.5-30V that ensures an IPM is driven to the optimum intended level, lowering system power budget.

The ACPL-M484 and ACPL-P484 optocouplers offer input-output withstand voltage of 3.75kVrms and the ACPL-W484 device offers 5kVrms, each for one minute for UL 1577-compliance. The CSA-approved devices meet IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-2 approval with working voltage (Viorm) of 560Vpeak for ACPL-M484, 891Vpeak for ACPL-P484 and 1140Vpeak for ACPL-W484. The ACPL-M484 device is available in an SO-5 package with both clearance and creepage of 5mm. The ACPL-P484 device is available in a stretched SO-6 package with clearance and creepage of 7mm and 8mm, respectively. The ACPL-W484 device is available in a stretched SO-6 package with clearance and creepage of 8mm.

The optocouplers feature minimized pulse width distortion for fast drive and under voltage lock-out (UVLO) with hysteresis for IPM protection. They also have low Icc supply current to allow for bootstrap supplies and positive output type (totem pole output). The devices operate at an industrial temperature range of -40C to 105C and have a LED drive current of 4mA(min).
