PFC controller operates from -40C to 85C

Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) has rolled out what it claims as the first interleaved digital power factor correction (PFC) controller. The dual-phase ADP1048 uses conventional, continuous-conduction-mode PFC techniques to reduce harmonic distortion. ADI added that the device offers highly accurate AC power metering capability.

The ADP1048 can be configured as an interleaved design to reduce inductor size and replace the AC/DC rectifier to improve efficiency in bridgeless boost mode. These techniques convert all signals to the digital domain and allow parameters to be adjusted and reported over a PMBus-compliant interface, including accurate measurement of input voltage, current and power. The ADP1048 is versatile and easy-to-use, enabling AC/DC designers and system architects to tweak their design in real-time and optimize efficiency at system level, stated ADI.


ADP1048 provides power metering accuracy of 3 percent at full load.

The interleaved PFC controller is easily programmed using an intuitive GUI that enables customers to design and optimize their systems without the complex code programming required by alternative DSP-based devices, ADI continued. Designed specifically for high reliability AC/DC PFC systems and motor control applications, the ADP1048 is suited to communications infrastructure, industrial and instrumentation systems such as motor control, and high-power medical imaging applications.

The device touts a power metering accuracy of 3 percent at full load current with further improvements to 1 percent with customer calibration. The digital controller also offers enhanced transient response through nonlinear control algorithms, programmable inrush control to reduce startup over-stress, real-time programming to maximize efficiency and extensive fault detection and reporting for improved reliability, ADI noted. The ADP1048 can be frequency synchronized to eliminate 'beat' frequency noise, or alternatively, the switching frequency spread spectrum feature can be enabled to further improve EMI.

The ADP1048 digital PFC controllers operate from -40C to 85C. The devices are packaged in 24-lead QSOP and are priced at $3.60 each per 1,000 pieces.
