Optocouplers operate from -40C to 125C

Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. has released the FODM8801 as part of the OptoHiT series of high temperature phototransistor optocouplers. According to the company, the device uses Fairchild's OPTOPLANAR coplanar packaging technology to achieve high noise immunity and reliable isolation at high operating temperatures.

The FODM8801 consists of an aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) infrared LED optically coupled to a phototransistor. The device provides a guaranteed Current Transfer Ratio (CTR) for both saturated and non-saturated modes of operation and switching specifications in extended operating temperature range of -40C to 125C, noted Fairchild.

The device operates at a very low input current (IF), stated the company. The FODM8801 is packaged in a compact, half-pitch, mini-flat, 4-pin package (1.27mm lead pitch) that saves board space and provides more design flexibility, allowing for overall reductions in system cost, claimed Fairchild.

Additionally, the FODM8801 provides high isolation voltage for increased reliability in lead-free environments. Devices in the OptoHiT series are engineered for industrial applications including power supplies, motor controls and consumer applications that include chargers and adapters.

The device costs $0.55 in 1,000 quantity pieces. Samples are available upon request with 8-10 weeks ARO.
