Aptina Imaging Corp. has announced a backside illuminated (BSI) sensor that claims to enable a class of smartphone cameras to deliver the performance of digital still cameras. The AR0832E is a 1/3.2in optical format, 8MP sensor with a 1.4? BSI pixel.

The AR0832E captures sharp video and crisp snapshots in various lighting operationsfrom low light to bright light environments, noted Aptina. According to the company, it built upon its experience and know-how in developing advanced frontside illuminated (FSI) pixels with Aptina A-Pix technology.

The BSI advances include incorporation of deep photodiodes to increase full well capacity and extend dynamic range, precisely engineered pixel architectures to achieve enhanced light sensitivity, and advanced CFA alignment techniques to lower cross-talk and achieve higher QE and color accuracy.

Aptina's AR0832E is sampling now with high volume customer shipments expected in 2Q12. It is available in die form.
