Japanese wireless carrier NTT Docomo Inc. is forming a fabless joint venture with Fujitsu Ltd, Fujitsu Semiconductor Ltd, NEC Corp., Panasonic Mobile Communications Co. Ltd and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. The venture will develop and sell semiconductors for handsets and other mobile devices.

The joint venture, to be established by the end of March 2012, will develop feature-rich, small-size, low-power-consumption semiconductors equipped with modem functionality, NTT Docomo said. It will focus on developing products for LTE and LTE-Advanced mobile communication standards, which will be sold in markets globally, the firm said.

NTT Docomo said the joint venture would be formed after all parties agree on details, which are now being worked out through consultation. NTT Docomo said it would invest about about $5.8 million (450 million yen) to establish a wholly owned subsidiary, called Communication Platform Co., headed by Mitsunobu Komori, an executive vice president and chief technical officer of NTT Docomo, by the middle of January.
