Dual-core MEMS gyroscope supports UI, OIS apps

STMicroelectronics has rolled out its first dual-core gyroscope capable of handling both user-motion recognition and camera image stabilization. The L3G4IS is a three-axis MEMS gyroscope that, according to the company, cuts device size and cost, and eases system complexity in mobile phones, tablets and other smart consumer devices.

Two different independent reading chains and digital interfaces allow the L3G4IS to deliver previously unseen levels of flexibility to the end user, ST stated. Each reading chain and the corresponding full-scale can be activated by powering two separate pins. The internal ASIC blocks automatically detect and enable the selected device configuration.


The L3G4IS has a supply voltage range from 2.4-3.6V.

The MEMS gyroscope has three selectable full-scales (250/500/2000dps) for gaming and touts 65dps full-scale for OIS applications. It features independent I2C and SPI digital interfaces, embedded temperature sensor, and integrated low- and high-pass filters with user-selectable bandwidth. The L3G4IS has a supply voltage range from 2.4-3.6V, power-down and sleep mode for smart power saving, and embedded FIFO buffer.

The sensing element is manufactured using a dedicated micro-machining process developed by ST to produce inertial sensors and actuators on silicon wafers. Additionally, the L3G4IS can operate in a temperature range of -30C to 85C.

The innovative design of ST's dual-core gyroscope employs separate output paths optimized for the two different functions in a 4 x 4x 1mm plastic land grid array (LGA) package, ST added. It is sampling now and volume production is scheduled for 2Q12, with unit pricing at $3.9 for volumes in the range of 1,000 pieces.
