Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has recently featured an OMAP4470 processor-based tablet running on a pre-release version of Windows 8. Geared particularly for tablets, TI noted that the OMAP4470 processor's multimedia, end-to-end security and multitasking capabilities complement Windows 8 key features that include digital identity controls, responsive touch, UIs and cloud computing.

The OMAP4470 platform's smart multicore architecture pairs its main CPUs with several differentiated features such as programmable accelerators, hardware composition engines and a dedicated ISP. Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX544 GPU and enhanced memory architecture add more functionality while an OMAP-specific distributed composition architecture enables advanced image and video layering for crisp, HD visuals, said the company. The processor uses these elements and more to enable high-speed multitasking without interruption and at ultra-low power that benefits many applications running on Windows 8, continued TI.

Tablets used for cloud-based applications, accessing work documents or streaming premium content benefit from the TI's system-level M-Shield mobile security technology. The M-Shield solution also operates a hardware-protected, trusted execution environment (TEE) that does not require a dedicated chip or extra CPU cycles, freeing the CPUs for critical Windows 8 computing functions, TI described.

Likewise, OMAP4470 face-based processing and recognition technology can support password storage and protection applications. Such digital identity controls require the use of the OMAP platform's display subsystem, hardware-accelerated computer vision libraries and low-light improvement technology to ensure accuracy in any face recognition environments.
