Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has unveiled what it touts as the industry's first 100V synchronous buck regulator with integrated MOSFETs. According to the company, the LM5017 is a step-down switching regulator that cuts PCB area and system cost while improving high-voltage reliability in telecommunication, industrial, smart grid and automotive systems.

Used in conjunction with the WEBENCH online design tool, the LM5017 simplifies high-voltage DC/DC conversion and speeds the design process, stated the company. The 600mA device enables direct point-of-load voltage regulation from input voltages as high as 100V. This eliminates external transient voltage suppressors or clamps required to achieve reliable operation in high-voltage applications.

Integrated MOSFETs eliminate freewheeling Schottky diodes and improve efficiency. Pin-compatible 4 x 4mm LLP packaging offers a scalable solution that covers a range of power requirements. Constant on-time (COT) control architecture provides excellent load transient response with no loop compensation required, further reducing the PCB area and simplifying the power supply design process, added TI.

The switching regulators can also be used as isolated bias supplies for systems requiring small, efficient isolated power supplies. Unlike alternative flyback solutions, the LM5017 operates at switching frequencies up to 1MHz.

The LM5017 features wide 9-100V input voltage range. The 600mA LM5017 is pin compatible and supports both non-isolated step-down and isolated power supply applications. Likewise, peak current limit and overtemperature detection protect the device from overload. Undervoltage threshold and hysteresis can be independently programmed.

The LM5017 is available in volume and offered in a thermally-enhanced 8-pin LLP package. The suggested retail price of the LM5017 is $1.65 in 1,000-unit quantities.
