The shapes of things to come
More tablets, embedded systems and high-octane inspiration speeches by its new CEO are clearly part of the shape of things to come at AMD.

The camera with embedded AMD processor for photo processing is one example of the kind of embedded systems the company will target. Likewise more gaming systems like the Samsung surface display AMD demoed could be growth drivers for 2012 and beyond.

Only three tablets all using an existing Zacate processor made it to the demo floor at this week's event. The MSI model (bottom) uses the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Also on tap are more rousing speeches from new CEO Rory Read whose boyish looks belie the fact he started his career with IBM in 1983. Read was double-timing in place before the event began, clearly pumped up and primed for the event with a mix of plenty of boxing and industry metaphors.

"This is our opportunity to step out of the shadows, take advantage of the inflexion point and lead," he said. "This is our opportunity right here, right now," he roared, his voice rising in his wrap up at the end of the day.
