Polymer separators for li-ion batteries unveiled

Teijin Ltd has introduced a polymer separator for lithium ion secondary batteries (LIBs) that uses what the company said is the world's first coating made of a fluorine-based compound. The Lielsort separator claims to achieve superior heat resistance and adhesion for laminated-type LIBs for tablets and smartphones.

Teijin offers two types of separators under the Lielsort brand, including a heat-resistant separator. The product is coated with Teijinconex meta-aramid and achieves exceptional capacity and energy density as well as enhanced safety and lifespan for liquid-electrolyte cylindrical LIBs used in products including PCs and vehicles, noted the company. The coating covers both sides of the separator.


Lielsort extends battery lifespan.

Lielsort, in addition to improving output by about 20 percent compared to conventional LIBs, can also be combined with a high-potential positive electrode to extend the battery's lifespan by several times longer than batteries with existing separators, said Teijin.

Teijin's Lielsort separators, which have been approved by leading battery manufacturers, are now ready for initial shipments.
