TI's LED driver boasts primary side sensing, PFC

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has announced an off-line primary side sensing controller to expand its line of non-dimming LED drivers. The TPS92310 AC/DC constant current driver with power factor correction (PFC) claims to reduce cost and shrinks-to-fit high-power LED retrofit bulbs such as A19, PAR30/38 and GU10.

According to the company, the TPS92310 is the first in a family of primary side, regulated controllers with PFC.�TI added that the device is the industry's first TRIAC dimmable LED driver featuring both full-range and flicker-free dimming.


The TPS92310 aims to reduce cost and shrinks-to-fit high-power LED retrofit bulbs including A19, PAR30/38 and GU10.

The TPS92310 LED driver has an AC input voltage that supports all common line voltages (100V, 120V, 230V, 240V and 277V) including U.S. commercial. Its primary side sensing capability provides accurate LED current regulation, eliminating optocoupler, secondary error amplifier and associated passive components, noted the company. Likewise, the device boasts BoM reduction by 14 percent.

The device features dual operating modes of either adaptive constant on-time (COT) that provides inherent power factor correction with no external components, or peak current control that provides low LED current ripple to minimize stroboscopic effects. Its Critical-Conduction-Mode (CCM) with Zero-Current Detection (ZCD) offers valley switching for improved power conversion efficiency and low-EMI, TI indicated. Likewise, the controller touts cycle-by-cycle current limit, over/under voltage protection and thermal shutdown protect the LED driver and user against fault and abnormal operating conditions.

The TPS92310 is available in volume in a 10-pin MSOP package. The suggested retail price is $0.49 in 1,000-unit quantities.
