Smart high side switches drive automotive body apps

Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced a family of smart high-side switches designed for advanced electrical load control in automotive body electronics.

Automotive applications often need to switch high currents into grounded resistive or inductive loads. These applications include motors, heaters and incandescent lamps, which usually use discrete or electro-mechanical solutions for the switching.

Fairchild's new family of smart high-side switches claim to provide an alternative to discrete MOSFET solutions by integrating protection and diagnostic features within the switches, thus cutting component count and PCB complexity.

The FDDS100H06_F085 smart high-side switch is an N-channel power MOSFET with charge pump, ground-referenced CMOS-compatible input and diagnostic output with integrated protection functions. It has diagnostic feedback capability that provides system control options to minimize impact under various fault conditions. The switch offers Rds(on) of 9m, I load of 48A, runs on a supply voltage of 5.5V to 38V in a TO263_7L package.

The FDBS09H04A_F085A and FDDS10H04A_F085A are smart high-side switches incorporating an N-channel power MOSFET device featuring a charge pump, current controlled input and diagnostic feedback with load current sense and integrated Smart Trench chip-on-chip technology.

The FDBS09H04A_F085A switch offers Rds(on) of 10m, I load of 41A, also runs on a supply voltage of 5.5V to 38V but in a TO252_5L package.

The FDDS10H04A_F085A switch offers Rds(on) of 100m, I load of 3A, runs on a supply voltage of 5.5V to 37V and comes also in a TO252_5L package.

The devices incorporate internal self-protection features that prevent damage to the end systems for conditions such as over temperature, shorted load, load dump and overvoltage, providing high reliability in demanding automotive applications. Qualified to AEC automotive standards, they also offer current limitation, short circuit protection, very low standby power, and ESD protection. The devices also feature optimized state electromagnetic compatibility.

Samples of the devices are available on request. In 1,000 quantities, the FDDS100H06_F085 is priced at $1.13; the FDBS09H04A_F085A is $1.95; and the FDDS10H04A_F085A is $1.90. Delivery takes 8-12 weeks ARO.
