5MBd digital optocouplers tip lower power

Avago Technologies rolls a family of 5MBd digital optocouplers that the company claims use less power than similar devices. In addition to lower power, the ACPL-x2xL optocouplers' new LED and detector IC design also enable higher isolation voltage, and better CMR performance than previous devices.

The optocouplers are suited for isolation applications in a range of products, from power supply and motor control circuits to data communications and digital logic ICs.

The optocouplers require minimum LED drive current of 1.6mA, and detector IC power consumption of less than 1.1mA. The detector IC has a CMOS output stage with glitch-free output during power-up and power-down, and optical receiver input stage with built-in Schmitt trigger that gives logic-compatible waveforms, cutting the need for additional wave shaping. An internal shield guarantees high CMR of minimum 25kV/?s at 1000V common-mode voltage. The devices operate at 3.3V/5V power supply with guaranteed AC and DC performance from an extended temperature range of -40C to +105C.

The ACPL-M21L, ACPL-021L and ACPL-W21L are single-channel optocouplers in 5-lead small-outline (SO5), 8-lead small-outline (SO8) and stretched 6-lead small-outline (SO6) packages, respectively.

The ACPL-024L and ACPL-K24L are dual-channels optocouplers in 8-lead small-outline (SO8) and stretched 8-lead small-outline (SO8) packages, respectively.

The optocouplers are compliant to industrial safety standards IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-5 approval for reinforced insulation, UL 1577 and CSA.

The ACPL-M21L is the first optocoupler in the family to become available in sample quantities. They will sell for $0.88 a piece in lots of 10k units.
