Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has launched its second-generation A-series APUs for mainstream and ultrathin notebooks, all-in-one and traditional desktops, home theater PCs and embedded designs.

The second-generation series, which is also codenamed "Trinity," was enhanced to enable best-in-class PC mobility, entertainment and gaming experience, AMD said.

The company said that the newly released APUs offer double the performance watt compared to AMD's previous generation APU offering. It also has an increased CPU performance of up to 29 percent and higher processor speeds, due mainly to the next-generation AMD "Piledriver" CPU core with third-generation AMD turbo core technology. The turbo core technology helps shift power dynamically between the CPU and GPU cores depending on application need. This effectively provides a more responsive experience that can boost PC frequencies to up to 3.2GHz, AMD said.

AMD's Radeon HD 7000 series graphics are also added to the APUs for an increase in graphics performance, up to 56 percent than the previous generation. The combined CPU and GPU cores deliver more than 700 gigaflops of computing performance. This, according to AMD, is several times more than the fastest x86 CPUs.

The second-generation APUs also offers 12 hours of battery life, increasing performance levels while consuming half the power as its predecessor.

It also gives users superior Web-based video experience through plug-ins for Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer 9, making it easy for consumers to turn on AMD Steady Video technology, the company said.
