ZMD AG (ZMDI) has announced its new research and development facility in Limerick, Ireland. ZMDI is a Dresden-based semiconductor company that specializes in enabling energy-efficient solutions. It supplies analog and mixed-signal solutions for automotive, industrial, medical, information technology and consumer applications.

Through ZMDI's collaboration with the Irish government's Industrial Development Authority (IDA), the company will create 35 highly-skilled engineering positions for graduates and technicians over the next five years in Limerick.

Ireland's finance minister said, "The addition of ZMDI to Limerick is a major endorsement of Ireland's capabilities in the areas of analog and mixed-signal electronics and R&D. The company will provide excellent employment opportunities in the Mid-West region for talented engineering graduates and technicians".

Commenting on the announcement, ZMDI's Bernhard Huber said, "After considering a number of global locations for this strategically important R&D center, we decided that Limerick was the perfect fit for our company due to the research expertise in the University of Limerick, the availability of engineering skills, the cluster of many leading players in electronics in the region and the support of IDA Ireland."

The research and development center will focus on the development of products for the smart power management sector, which is a key growth area driven by the demand for increased energy efficiency in data center cooling, telecommunications and high-end computing, ZMDI said.
