Serializer touts 185MHz pixel clock rate for mobile apps

Texas Instruments Inc. has rolled out the dual LVDS DS90C187 low-power, FPD-Link serializer targeted for tablet computers, ebooks, laptops and portable display monitors. Claiming a pixel clock rate of 185MHz, the serializer supports WQXGA LCD panels at 30Hz and QXGA panels at 60Hz, compared to 174MHz for WUXGA screen resolution offered by competing devices. The device also claims to extend battery life by using only 90mW when supporting the 1,080p WUXGA screen resolution.

The original LVDS interface for LCD panels, FPD-Link is interoperable with the company?s FlatLink products. It uses three or more differential signals, plus a clock, to transmit video data to the panel. LVDS is the most widely deployed interface for mid-sized display panels and requires no software overhead, enabling faster time-to-market for production ramp. Until recently, display resolutions for tablets could get by with a single-lane LVDS interface. With increasing panel sizes and higher resolution displays, dual LVDS interfaces are proliferating.

The DS90C187 features a single 1.8V supply rail enabling ultralow 90mW typical power consumption when operating at WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) HD resolution in 24-bit RGB color. Its 185MHz pixel clock allows support of 24-bit color video resolution up to WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) at 30Hz and QXGA (2,048 x 1,536) at 60Hz. It is packed in a 7mm x 7mm dual row QFN package, minimizing board area and simplifying layout.

The device supports reduced-swing LVDS to mitigate EMI. Plus, an optional 18-bit color mode, at 6 bits per pixel, cuts power consumption and enables compatibility with lower cost panels.

The DS90C187 joins the DS90C185 single FPD-Link serializer, which consumes only 50mW of power, supports 24-bit LCD screen resolutions up to SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) at 60Hz, and comes in a tiny 6mm x 6mm package.

The DS90C187 and the DS90C185 are available now in 92-pin and 48-pin QFN packages, respectively. Suggested retail price is $3.95 and $2.50, respectively, in 1,000-unit quantities. ************

DES: Ecliptek?s EMRE series of four surface-mount LVDS MEMS oscillators enable output frequency up to 625MHz with a frequency stability of ?20ppm.

Ecliptek Corp. has unveiled the EMRE series of LVDS surface-mount MEMS-based oscillators. The series is said to improve on the company?s existing LVDS oscillator offerings, offering higher frequency operation and better jitter performance.

Available with a frequency stability of ?20ppm, the new devices measure 5mm x 7mm for the EMRE13 (3.3VDC) and EMRE12 (2.5VDC); and 3.2mm x 5mm for the EMRE23 (3.3VDC) and EMRE22 (2.5VDC). They provide output frequencies up to 625MHz in industry standard six pad SMD packaging.

The RoHS-compliant MEMS clock oscillators are available now in commercial, extended commercial and industrial operating temperate ranges.
