Reference architecture speeds modem time-to-market

Ceva Inc. has unveiled a reference architecture for LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) and legacy cellular modems. The software-based, multimode architecture is based on the company's CEVA-XC4000 DSP architecture framework. It leverages power management and system partitioning to enable a software-based LTE-A solution as small as 3.4 x 3.4mm and using only 100mW on a 28nm process. The reference architecture includes optimized LTE-A libraries developed by CEVA, thus speeding time-to-market and cutting development efforts for customer SoCs.

The reference architecture offers software-hardware system integration capabilities to provide licensees with flexibility and scalability for multimode wireless system designs. It enables the integration of customer-owned coprocessors and hardware accelerators. This makes it possible to reuse proprietary IP within the reference architecture.

The reference architecture supports the most demanding use cases, including the maximum throughput of LTE-A Rel-10 up to CAT-7. For example, it supports carrier aggregation of up to two carrier components to a total of 40MHz channel bandwidth, with spatial multiplexing of 8x4 MIMO, 300Mbit/s downlink and 100Mbit/s on the uplink.

The LTE-Advanced reference architecture is supported by CEVA-Toolbox, a software development environment, incorporating Vec-C compiler technology for advanced vector processors, enabling the entire architecture to be programmed in C-level. An integrated simulator provides accurate and efficient verification of the entire system, including the memory subsystems. In addition, CEVA-Tool-box includes libraries, a graphical debugger, and a complete optimization tool chain named CEVA Application Optimizer. The Application Optimizer enables automatic and manual optimization applied in the C source code.

The LTE-A reference architecture is available today for lead customers.
