LED micro-module drivers ease lighting design

Texas Instruments has unveiled the 14W TPS92550 and 23W TPS92551 constant current buck LED driver micro-modules that the company claims replace four or more components in LED lighting systems. The devices incorporate the required power and passive circuitry into a single IC package to deliver up to 23W of power to the LED.

Using the company's WEBENCH LED Architect, the modules enable the lighting developer to design a power management circuit with the minimum components needed to drive a string of up to 18 LEDs at up to 96 percent power efficiency.

The TPS92550 and TPS92551 LED driver modules integrate an inductor, Schottky diode and a handful of other passive components, simplifying design and procurement. They enable LED current adjustment from 300mA to 450mA to control brightness. The IC package makes the modules easy to use while providing thermal and EMI protection. Also, the micro-modules offer efficient heat dissipation and it has a back metal plate that allows for operation in high ambient temperatures.

The TPS92550 and TPS92551 are offered in a 10.16mm x 9.85mm x 4.57mm 7-pin TO-PMOD package. They are available in volume, at a suggested retail price of $5.00 for the 14-W TPS92550 and $5.50 for the 23-W TPS92551, in 1,000-unit quantities.
