Step down regulator targets smart meters, sensors

Texas Instruments Inc. has launched the TPS54061, a 200mA, 60V SWIFT high-density, synchronous step-down regulator that they claim offers 90 percent efficiency at 24Vin, 5Vout at 50kHz, and low noise performance.

Measuring 125 x 125mm, the regulator integrates high side and low side power MOSFETs and is said to improve efficiency in industrial automation and 4mA to 20mA sensor control applications. It is likewise suited for smart meter, PoE, computing and consumer designs.

The TPS54061 converter manages input voltages from 4.7V to 60V, and can withstand voltage transients up to 62V, while saving energyeven under light load conditions. The converter supports various TI processors, including Stellaris ARM Cortex -M MCUs, C5000 DSPs and ultralow-power MSP430 16bit MCUs.

The device operates at 90?A operating current with a shutdown current of only 1.4?A. It offers synchronized switching frequency up to 1.1MHz. It is a 3 x 3mm SON package with integrated diode, high and low-side FETs.

The TPS54061 is available in volume now at a suggested resale price of $1.65 in 1,000-unit quantities. The TPS54061EVM-142 evaluation module (EVM) operates from an 8V to 60V input (24V nominal) and provides a 3.3V output at 200mA.
