PWM controllers up SMPS reliability, cut board space

Fairchild Semiconductor has debuted the FSL206MRx integrated PWM controllers to meet the need of SMPS designers for space-saving, cost- effective power supply solutions with high energy efficiency, optimized system performance and improved reliability.

A member of the company's FPS Green Mode Fairchild power switch device family, the FSL206MRx series is suited for offline SMPS that require minimal external components. The integrated PWM controller with avalanche-rugged SenseFET includes an internal regulator, eliminating the need for an auxiliary bias winding and includes a built-in high-voltage startup and full-protection circuitry that saves board space and total BOM.

Optimized for efficiency and power dissipation with burst-mode operation, the FSL206MRN and FSL206MRL can reach a power loss of 150mW with no-bias winding and 25mW with bias winding at no-load condition when the input voltage is 265VAC. Additionally, the FSL206MRx series is supported by Fairchild's Power Supply WebDesigner (PSW), an easy-to-use, powerful online design tool that allows designers to further customize and fine-tune their designs without having to build a bench prototype.

The features and benefits of the FPS green mode power switch devices include:

  • Precision fixed operating frequency: 67kHz
  • Frequency modulation for attenuating electromagnetic interference (EMI)
  • Built-in soft-start and startup circuit prevents transformer saturation
  • No need for auxiliary bias winding
  • Low under voltage lockout (UVLO)
  • Ultra-low operating current: 300?A
  • Separated high- and low-voltage pins to avoid creepage
  • Various protection features: OLP, OVP, AOCP, TSD and LS for higher reliability












The FSL206MRx devices help designers meet the engineering challenges they face by providing the technology and process advancements that result in increased performance and functional integration in less design time, the company said.

Samples of the FSL206MRx devices are available upon request, delivery is at 8-12 weeks ARO, with prices for 1,000 quantity orders at $0.56 for the FSL206MRL (LSOP-8); $0.48 for the FSL206MRN (DIP-8); and $0.56 for the FSL206MRBN (DIP-8, Option for burst-mode level).
