NAND flash contract price falls in 1HJun

Keywords:NAND flash? UFD? USB? flash drive?

According to DRAMeXchange, due to NAND Flash buyers' anticipation of quarter-end effects and continually sluggish memory card and USB flash drive (UFD) market demand, NAND Flash contract price fell by 2-5 percent in the first half of June.

As the end of June marks the close of the financial quarter, NAND flash buyers are adopting conservative inventory control strategies. Buyers are also expecting suppliers to offer more attractive prices before the end of June. But as NAND Flash vendors are prioritizing their profits, they have become less willing to engage in price wars. These factors have resulted in fewer NAND Flash market transactions in 1HJun. DRAMeXchange expects the decline in NAND Flash contract price may slow in the future, dependent on demand momentum during the 3rd quarter of 2012.

2Q12 UFD market declines due to off-peak season, global economic woes
2Q12 is traditionally the off-peak season for the UFD market, implying a significant decrease in market demand after China's May Day holiday. Major UFD brand manufacturers have reacted to this by adopting more aggressive pricing strategies to stimulate demand. Manufactures have also increased product output in 20nm-class triple level cell (TLC) products in an attempt to provide brand makers with additional price leverage. However, these pricing strategies have not yielded significant results as UFD shipments fell by approximately 10 percent QoQ in the 2nd quarter of 2012. As the product ratio for 20nm-class 64Gb TLC increases, 8GB shipment figures will exceed that of 4GB, becoming the mainstream specification in 2Q12. With the upcoming UFD market peak sales season, market demand is expected to gradually increase. However, worldwide economic concerns caused by Euro debt troubles remain to be the most important factor affecting the UFD market in the second half of the year. The rise of cloud storage services such as Google Drive and Dropbox also pose further challenges to the UFD market.
