Multi-Si wafer improving, poised to replace mono-Si wafers

According to EnergyTrend, prices in the photovoltaic (PV) industry have yet to rebound and vendors have placed more priority on unit price despite demand recovery in the second half of the year. Furthermore, the price to performance ratio for the product category has already surpassed that of traditional p-type mono-Si wafers. This is due to high-efficiency multiSi wafers improving continuously and market price dropping rapidly. Industry vendors indicate that p-type mono-Si wafer market will eventually be obsolete as high-efficiency multiSi wafer products improve their quality.

Currently, efficiency for multiwafer products is over 17.8 percent, while p-type mono-wafer efficiency is above 20 percent. In terms of raw material price, average price for high-efficiency multiSi wafer and p-type mono-wafer products is around $1.17/piece and $1.48/piece, respectively. Looking at unit price, p-type mono-wafer products cost more than high-efficiency multiSi wafer products. Specific customizations aside, EnergyTrend has projected that high-efficiency multiSi wafer products will gradually cannibalize the p-type mono-wafer market. Although p-type products are presently the mainstream, factors such as recent exchange rates and declining product price has resulted in the continual downtrend of mono-Si wafers.

As for this week's price trends, polysilicon prices fell in the $20-22/kg range, while average price fell by 0.91 percent to $21.22/kg. The multiSi wafer price trend stayed flat this week as makers began July negotiations, with average price remaining at $1.071/piece.

Due to exchange rate issues and high-efficiency multiwafer products, Mono-Si wafer price fell to a low of $1.4/pieces while average price declined by 1.66 percent, at $1.485/piece. As for solar cells, manufacturers are discussing July prices with clients and suppliers, resulting in fluctuations. Average solar cell price arrived at $0.465/Watt, a decline of 0.21 percent. As for thin film products, the market was in a bit of chaos, causing average price to fall by 1.9 percent to $0.721/Watt.
