PMICs optimize power for i.MX 6-based devices

Dialog Semiconductor plc has unveiled its single-chip system power management ICs (PMICs) that are geared to optimize the power requirements of tablets, infotainment systems, media hubs and other smart devices based on Freescale multicore i.MX 6 series applications processors.

The company's flagship PMIC is at the heart of a power management reference board for Freescale i.MX 6Dual/Quad applications processors. Support for i.MX 6Solo/SoloLite is available via Dialog's DA9053, which has previously featured on Freescale's i.MX53 multimedia platform. Freescale is a strategic Dialog partner and is supported via Dialog's Processor Partner Program.

The NOVPEK(TM)i.MX6Q/D i.MX 6 Platform Evaluation Kit has been co-developed with Freescale i.MX 6 series ecosystem partner NovTech and enables OEMs to more rapidly bring to market precision-controlled, high-end systems based on i.MX 6 series processors. By using Dialog's configurable PMIC, the reference board delivers multiple settings for each peripheral voltage rail, programmable control for multiple power-on events and an accurate power consumption analysis framework to cut the power consumption of any i.MX 6 series application.

The Dialog device powers the i.MX 6 series SoC and system peripherals including external memories, WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS, FM receivers and modems on a very small (less than 200mm2) active PCB area with just a 1mm external component height, including all inductors, enabling the creation of thinner mobile products with longer battery life.

For greater performance and enhanced multimedia capability, the Dialog PMIC delivers over 14A total power capability to the Freescale i.MX 6 series system including CPU, memories and other peripherals on the reference board, said the company. In addition, the chip delivers an unprecedented degree of flexibility and configurability to precisely control the startup sequences, output voltages and DVC ramps.

With the PMIC's wide supply range of 2.7-5.5V, the reference board is able to use a single cell lithium battery as well as 5V power supply. The NOVPEK(TM) board can be ordered from NovTech, Dialog and their distribution partners.
