Efficient Power Corporation has announced a high efficiency wireless power demonstration system utilizing the high frequency switching capability of gallium nitride transistors. EPC's eGaN FETs operate at high frequencies, voltages and powers.

Highly resonant wireless power transfer was invented by the founders of WiTricity, which licenses its intellectual property to companies seeking to build products based on such technology. WiTricity technology caters to several applications in various fields such as consumer, medical, industrial and automotive.

Currently, wireless charging products available in the market utilize traditional magnetic induction coils with operating frequencies that range between 100-300kHz, and Class E, F and S amplifier converter topologies.

Organizations such as the Consumer Electronics Association and Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) have recently called for a higher frequency standard (6.78MHz) for wireless charging systems. Higher frequencies enable traditional silicon-based power transistors (MOSFETs) approach their switching capability limits.

The wireless power demonstration system jointly developed by EPC and WiTricity is a class-D power system operating at 6.78MHz, and capable of delivering up to 15 W to a load. This demonstration system endeavors to simplify the evaluation process of the wireless power technology and also includes critical components in a single system that can be easily connected to demonstrate the powering of a device with wireless energy transfer.
