Indonesia's Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan announced this week that Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Foxconn Technology Group has begun talks with PT Industri Telekomunikasi Indonesia (INTI) to discuss a potential partnership. According to local reports, Foxconn will set up assembly and production facilities in Indonesia as part of its plan to expand operations across Southeast Asia.

PT INTI operations and technical director Tikno Sutisna told reporters last week that the state-owned telecommunication equipment firm is eager to collaborate with Foxconn. INTI aims to hit $127.2 million in net sales by the end of this year, a 71.36 percent rise from 2011. Foxconn, which is the main supplier for multinational giants such as Apple, Dell and Microsoft, is expected to bring in up to $10 billion worth of investments over the next five years.

Foxconn has been actively looking for alternatives to address rising wage and manufacturing costs following incidents of labor unrest at its factories in China. (See 'Indonesia's low-cost labor, tax incentives spark Foxconn interest') The electronics giant has yet to confirm its negotiations with INTI as of press time. Foxconn CEO Terry Gou did, however, announce earlier this year that the company will diversify its production into fellow Asian countries like Japan, Indonesia and Myanmar.
