Foxconn Technology Group was forced to shut down operations Sept. 24 in its Taiyuan plant following a riot involving 2,000 of its workers. Police reports indicate that a non-work related fight broke out Sunday at 11:30pm in a dormitory near the facility. The altercation then escalated into a brawl that injured 40 people by the time local police pacified the crowd at 3 am.

According to China's Xinhua News Agency, a Foxconn spokesman said in a statement that the cause of the dispute is still under investigation and that the company is cooperating fully with the authorities. The spokesman did not confirm whether the plant is involved in parts production and assembly of Apple's iPhone 5.

Foxconn has had to deal with a string of controversies in recent months. Back in February, the FLA commissioned independent labour monitoring organisations to assess factories in Guanlan, Longhua and Chengdu after several employees committed suicide reportedly as a result of depression brought about by harsh working conditions. Recommendations were made and a remediation plan was submitted by Apple and Foxconn. (See Labour auditor gives passing grade to Foxconn.)
