Samsung, STM team up for 32/28nm tech foundry services

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced a foundry production of STMicroelectronics' leading products using 32/28nm High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process technology. STMicroelectronics selected Samsung's foundry business to provide them with products at the 32/28nm process node. The relationship has already resulted in taping-out a dozen ST advanced system-on-chip (SoC) devices for mobile, consumer and network applications.

Kwang-Hyun Kim, executive vice president of Samsung's foundry business, stated that the Korean giant has successfully started production of STMicroelectronics' new-generation 32/28nm SoC products.

He added that a foundry relationship with ST demonstrates Samsung's commitment to advanced process technology and its 32/28nm HKMG process-technology leadership.

Samsung and STMicroelectronics have developed 32/28nm High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) technology through participation in the International Semiconductor Development Alliance (ISDA). Samsung's foundry business has offered access to 32nm HKMG process technology for early market leaders and 28nm HKMG process technology for customers looking for traditional migration benefits.

Jean-Marc Chery, STMicroelectronics' executive vice president chief-technology officer, stated that another key to ST's success in each of its target markets is working with industry leaders. Both ST and Samsung have worked together on advanced process-technology development through the ISDA and that experience has provided significant insight into their ability to work together to meet each of their objectives as well as providing unique service to their customers in demanding and fast moving markets.
