Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) has unveiled what it says is the industry's first fully isolated ADC geared for poly-phase energy metering applications. The ADE7913 3-channel, sigma-delta ADC incorporates the company's patented iCoupler and isoPower technologies to implement isolated signal transfer and DC/DC power conversion across a 5kV-rated insulation barrier.

This enables the use of shunt resistor sensing elements instead of current transformers, thus providing immunity to magnetic field interference and tampering, said ADI. The use of shunts instead of CTs also reduces system cost and size, added the company.

The device family features three 24bit isolated ADCs: one current channel and two voltage channels. In addition, the ADCs have up to four ADE7913 energy metering ICs synchronously clocked from a single crystal or an external clock. Also, the ADCs tout an on-chip temperature sensor an SPI serial interface, and an integrated voltage reference and voltage regulator.

The ADE7913 is available and costs $5.71 each in 1,000 package quantities. It comes in a 20-lead wide body SOIC package with greater than 8mm clearance and creepage. The EVAL-ADE7913EBZ evaluation board for the ADE7913 is available and priced at $350.
