SEMI has released a forecast of the demand in silicon units from 2012-2014. The results show polished and epitaxial silicon shipments reaching 8,901 million square inches this year, 9,400 million square inches in 2013 and 9,965 million square inches in 2014. Total wafer shipments are expected to remain below the all-time high set in 2010 this year but will experience record levels in 2013 and 2014, added the market research firm.

"In spite of heightened economic uncertainty, silicon shipments for 1H12 were very promising," said Denny McGuirk, president and CEO of SEMI. "We expect 2012 silicon shipments to remain essentially flat when compared to 2011 and increase in 2013 and 2014."

Silicon wafers are the fundamental building material for semiconductors, which in turn, are vital components of virtually all electronics goods, including computers, telecommunications products, and consumer electronics. The highly engineered thin round disks are produced in various diameters (from 1-12in) and serve as the substrate material on which most semiconductor devices or "chips" are fabricated.
