Areas in automotive development that exhibit high growth rate include electrified powertrains, telematics and smartphone connectivity, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and human-machine-interface (HMI), according to an updated report from Strategy Analytics.

Electronics are increasingly being deployed in system design, resulting in more design centres developing ECUs (Electronic Control Units) and software. The wider availability of skilled labour, necessary infrastructure, allied with the existence of other high tech industries, government incentives and lower costs have enabled the rise of design centres in countries, such as Bulgaria, the Philippines and Vietnam, despite being small auto markets.

There are a growing number of design centres in China, facilitated by its growing auto market and by the acquisition of foreign companies for new Chinese players who are keen to enter the automotive electronics marketexamples of which include BWI Group and Nexteer.

This trend has also made Silicon Valley more relevant to the automotive electronics industry since the region offers technologies specifically for these growth areas, which are often not available at traditional U.S. car manufacturing centres. These new players are well versed in surveying user experience when designing HMI systems. Google's development on autonomous driving is an illustration of what can be achieved outside the conventional chain of automotive design, said analyst Kevin Mak.
