Avnet Electronics Marketing Asia has signed a distribution partnership with Philips Lumileds to expand its portfolio of application-specific LED lighting solutions.

Philips Lumileds CEO Pierre-Yves Lesaicherre said the deal further demonstrates the company's commitment to addressing the needs of its customers in Asia. The lighting arm of Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics announced late last year that it will open a second Lumileds manufacturing facility in Penang, Malaysia. The 300,000 sq. ft. plant will be responsible for high-volume production of Luxeon LEDs. CEO Frans van Houten told reporters during the plant's opening ceremony that 36 per cent of the company's global total sales value is generated by its businesses in the region. The market potential of LED is vast and there is room for every player in the industry to grow. For instance, the LED industry in Malaysia has come a long way in forty years with a host of European and American companies setting up bases in the country. Asia's expanding role in the electronics industry's evolution presents both challenges and opportunities for the sector, said Avnet Electronics Marketing President Harley Feldberg. In an interview with EE Times, Feldberg explains that Asia is helping to mitigate the industry's cyclical swings and that its distribution market is headed for the type of wrenching consolidation.
