Kilopass to augment tech roadmap with $8M funding

Keywords:NVM IP? CMOS? SRAM? eFlash?

Kilopass Technology, a provider of semiconductor logic non-volatile memory (NVM) intellectual property (IP), has received $8 million from an unnamed consumer electronics licensee to fund future product needs concerning advanced memory requirements. Kilopass said it will use the capital infusion to aggressively expand the company's technology roadmap and market presence.

Kilopass pioneered logic anti-fuse NVM IP. It has over a decade of in-house expertise developing and bringing to market one-time programmable and few-time programmable anti-fuse NVM IP in every leading edge next generation logic CMOS process technology including 20nm silicon. Its expanding pool of engineers is trying to address fundamental memory problems confronting SoC designers today, including scalability of SRAM and eFlash in successively smaller process geometries. "We have worked closely with our 150 licensees across consumer, mobility, analogue mixed signal, automotive, and industrial markets to address their embedded NVM needs," said CEO Charlie Cheng.

Developments in low power, high performance CMOS logic technology are vital to the future of microprocessors and SoC devices for personal computers, servers and smartphones. Recently, a group of researchers from the Tokyo Institute of Technology recently proposed an architecture of power-gating using non- volatile SRAM and non-volatile FF circuits, called non-volatile power-gating. (See Research targets energy-efficient CMOS logic systems.)

Market research firm Yole Dveloppement predicts tha the global emerging non-volatile memory market will grow from a value of $209 million in 2012 to $2 billion in 2018, equating to a compound annual growth rate of 46 per cent for the period. MRAM and PCM will lead the emerging NVM market ahead of ReRAM, reaching a combined annual value of $1.6 billion in 2018. (See MRAM, PCM to lead $2B NVM market .)
