Microchip expands LIN 2.1/SAE J2602-2 devices

Microchip Technology Inc. has extended its LIN portfolio with the LIN 2.1 and SAE J2602-2 compliant and low-power MCP2003A transceiver, MCP2021A, MCP2022A, MCP2025 and MCP2050 LIN system basis chips (SBCs), and PIC16F1829LIN system in package (SiP). According to the company, the devices include high integration options such as a voltage regulator, windowed watchdog timer, battery monitor output and an MCU.

The devices feature high robustness including high electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) levels of more than 15kV on the LIN bus and battery-voltage pins, meeting or exceeding automotive manufacturer requirements such as Version 1.3 of the "OEM Hardware Requirements for LIN, CAN and FlexRay Interfaces in Automotive Applications." The voltage regulator integrated on some of the devices has also been specifically designed to operate in the automotive environment, and can withstand reverse battery conditions, 43V load dump transients and double-battery jump starts. This robustness enables reliable communication in harsh environments, and the high level of integration lowers cost and complexity while saving space, noted Microchip.

The PIC16F1829LIN SiP incorporates an 8bit Flash MCU, a voltage regulator and a LIN transceiver, along with peripherals such as a 10bit ADC, comparators and timersall in a 20-pin SSOP package. The enhanced USART peripheral enables easy connectivity to LIN physical layer transceivers and SBCs. Whether SiP or stand-alone solutions, Microchip's XLP MCU sleep currents, which are as low as 9nA, make them well suited for direct-battery applications and enable less drain on vehicle batteries, the firm continued.

All six LIN devices are available for sampling and volume production, and all of the following prices are listed in 5,000-unit quantities. The MCP2003A LIN transceiver is available in 8-pin SOIC and DFN packages for $0.60 each. The PIC16F1829LIN SiP is available in a 20-pin SSOP package for $1.75 each. The MCP2025 and MCP2021A SBCs integrate a LIN transceiver with a voltage regulator, and are both available in 8-pin SOIC and DFN packages, for $0.88 and $0.89 each, respectively. The MCP2022A SBC provides the same integration in 14-pin SOIC and TSSOP packages, for $1.01 each. Finally, the MCP2050 SBC adds a watchdog timer, and is available in 14-pin SOIC and 20-pin QFN packages for $1.04 each.
