IP vendor Sonics Inc. recently announced that ARM has taken a license to their patent portfolio. The move signals a closer cooperation between the two companies on Sonic's next generation interconnect offering. Sonics did not disclose how much ARM has paid for its license or the terms and conditions. The two companies compete in the provision of current generation interconnect IP with ARM providing its AMBA interconnect bus IP as an add-on to its processor cores.

Sonics and ARM will cooperate to support Sonics' power management technologies, which are intended to deliver power savings by the intelligent control of power to cores. The ability to keep cores switched off for longer periods of time, along with the ability to turn devices on and off more rapidly will enable power savings over current solutions, Sonics said. Similar techniques are being developed at the board-level.

"We welcome our enhanced relationship with ARM and look forward to providing products in support of the company's large ecosystem," said Grant Pierce, CEO of Sonics, in a statement.

In the same statement Tom Cronk, executive vice president and general manager of ARM's processor division said: "The agreement to license Sonics' interconnects patents and to support Sonics on their next-generation interconnect and low power management is an important step in strengthening the ecosystem. Sonics and ARM have a clear vision for the future of IP technology, which we look forward to realising together."
