6-axis motion tracker combines gyroscope, accelerometer

InvenSense Inc., a provider of motion tracking devices, has unleashed the MPU-6521 MEMS SoC. According to the company, the device is the world's smallest, lowest profile and lowest power 6-axis solution intended for next-generation of smartphones, tablets, gaming devices, motion-based remote controls and wearable sensors.

At 6.1mW, the MPU-6521 consumes 60 per cent less power than competing solutions, stated InvenSense. To enable the precision required for pedestrian navigation and wearable sensor applications, the MPU-6521's integrated gyroscope achieves low noise performance of 0.01dps/Hz. The MPU-6521 MEMS SoC includes the patented Digital Motion Processor (DMP) with integrated MotionFusion, run-time calibration and system-level power optimisation features.

Many designers have tried to dual-purpose the gyroscope already in their smartphones for navigation and gaming, but this just announced gyroscope is designed specifically for image-stabilization in camera modules for smartphones, simplifying the designers software integration task.

The MPU-6521 will be sampled to select customers in 2Q13.
