According to Strategy Analytics, Apple, Texas Instruments, Samsung, Nvidia and Intel have captured the top-five revenue share rankings in the tablet applications processor market in 1Q13. Apple maintained its lead with 40 per cent revenue share in the tablet applications processor market in, followed by TI with 13 per cent share and Samsung with 10 per cent share. The market remains profitable with a 52 per cent YoY growth in 1Q13 to reach $0.74 billion, noted the market analytics firm.

"Strategy Analytics estimates that the Chinese and Taiwan tablet chip companies together captured 29 per cent volume share in the tablet applications processor market in 1Q13. Among these companies, MediaTek made significant progress with the help of design-wins at Acer, Asus and Lenovo and is well-positioned to grab double-digit share in non-iPad tablets this year," says senior analyst Sravan Kundojjala.

Samsung's tablet applications processor shipments, meanwhile, registered five-fold growth in the first quarter largely due to its in-house client Samsung Mobile. But it is expected that Samsung will come under pressure from external suppliers such as Intel and Marvell who recently landed mass-market tablet design wins at its mobile arm.

The global smartphone applications processor market registered almost 50 per cent YoY growth to reach $3.6 billion in 1Q13, according to the Strategy Analytics.

According to the Strategy Analytics report, Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung, MediaTek and Broadcom grabbed the top-five revenue share spots in the smartphone applications processor market in 1Q13. Qualcomm led the smartphone applications processor market with 49 per cent revenue share followed by Apple with 13 per cent share and Samsung with 12 per cent share in 1Q13.

Strategy Analytics estimates that Qualcomm's smartphone applications processor revenue share increased to 49 per cent in 1Q13. The key highlight of Qualcomm's performance in 1Q13 was its surging stand-alone APQ-series applications processor shipments, thanks to high-profile design-wins such as the HTC One, Google Nexus 4, LG Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z. Qualcomm ranked number one in the stand-alone applications processor category, overtaking Apple and Samsung in 1Q13. The Snapdragon 600 (APQ8064T) has served Qualcomm well and the upcoming Snapdragon 800 family of chips will likely help further.

"Low-cost Chinese chip supplier Spreadtrum made strong progress in 1Q13 with the help of its EDGE and TD-SCDMA smartphone applications processors. Spreadtrum scored multiple design-wins at tier-one smartphone manufacturers and is well-positioned to make significant share gains in 2013," says Stuart Robinson, director of handset component technologies service at the research firm.
