Despite the expenditure problems faced by the military as regards the introduction of new platforms, technology will remain as the differentiator providing opportunities for RF technologies. This is according to Strategy Analytics that forecasted that the market for RF technologies will stay strong as the focus shifts towards enhancing capabilities in areas that include radar, satellite communications and electronic warfare.

This will be underpinned by operation across wider bandwidths and higher frequencies and the corresponding market for high power RF will grow at a CAGR of nine per cent through 2017. There will be a steady shift away from vacuum tube technology over the next five years and beyond as solid-state RF technologies such as GaN and SiC demonstrate the capabilities to meet future system requirements such as high frequency, wide bandwidth and high power operation.

"The need for bandwidth shows no sign of abating with net-centric warfare driving demand," noted Asif Anwar, director of the ADS service at Strategy Analytics. "This will drive a move towards higher frequencies across all applications, but the trend is especially notable in the communications sector with Ka-band expected to form an increasingly staple part of the military satellite communications portfolio over the coming years."

"The challenges facing North America, and the U.S. in particular are well documented, and European spending is also forecast to decline over the next ten years," observed Eric Higham, ADS service director North America. "From a defence industry perspective, the Asia-Pac, CALA and MEA markets offer opportunities with spending in these regions forecast to increase."
