Distributed power in portable electronics

Keywords:Power MOSFET?

This document discusses the concepts for portable appliances using switchable power supplies to control peripheral functions. A focus is set on voltage conversion and power distribution in the application. Many different voltages are required for the various ICs in modern mobile systems. The central battery supplies power to many voltage converters in a central Power Management Unit (PMU). Energy efficiency has become a key selection criterion for these voltage converters. Load switches take care of energy consumption only in parts of the system, that are mandatory for chosen use case. Reduction of quiescent currents extends the battery life time of the mobile application. Further important goal is to reduce the number and size of passive components to minimize costs and meet space requirements.
