RapidIO based platform touts 20Gbit/s switching

Integrated Device Technology (IDT) recently announced a supercomputing and data centre reference platform based on its 20Gbit/s RapidIO interconnect devices. The platform features a RapidIO-based backplane, compute nodes with RapidIO-to-PCIe interconnect, and Intel Xeon-based computing.

The RapidIO-based reference platform supports up to 48 advanced mezzanine card (AMC)-based compute nodes per chassis, with intra-chassis backplane communication speeds up to 20Gbit/s. Additional scale is achieved with external RapidIO-based top-of-rack switching, scaling up to 64,000 nodes per system. The platform accommodates Intel Xeon and Xeon Phi-class processing for supercomputing applications, and Intel Atom-class processors for data centres with modular AMC-based computing nodes.

The company's RapidIO switches offer 20Gbit/s of bandwidth per link, 100ns cut-through latency, 240Gbit/s of aggregate non-blocking switch performance, robust fault tolerance and hot-swap support, and built-in reliable transmission. Energy-efficient system designs take advantage of RapidIO's 300mW per 10Gbit/s of data C the highest performance-per-watt compared to other interconnects. In addition, IDT's RapidIO-to-PCIe bridge provides network interface controller functionality consuming 2W at 20Gbit/s in a 13x13mm package size, allowing for high-density solutions in computing applications.

The new platform will also be used as a basis for computing and switching reference design submissions by the RapidIO Trade Association (RTA) to the Open Compute Project. The reference designs can be used directly by data centre and supercomputing operators to create high-density, low-latency systems.
