Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) have already revolutionized the consumer marketfrom smartphones to tabletsall of which use multiple MEMS chips to sense orientation, motion, heading, and more. In the coming year, MEMS chips are poised to expand their reach into every electronics segment, from automotive to environmental to medical.

This year the total market for MEMS chips will reach $9 billion, according to director and senior analyst for MEMS and sensors, Jeremie Bouchard in IHS iSuppli's "MEMS Market Tracker," which predicts that the market will grow to over $12 billion by 2016.

And the long term looks even brighter, according to Fairchild Semiconductor visionary Janusz Bryzek who spoke recently at the "Shaping the Future of MEMS and Sensors" conference hosted by STMicroelectronics. There he predicting that the MEMS market is growing at a rate that outpaces the semiconductor market, reaching the trillion unit mark by 2023.
