Multi-touch controller IC receives Windows 8.1 certification

Dialog Semiconductor has revealed that its DA8901 multi-touch controller IC has met the requirements of Windows 8.1 certification and is the first chip to support touch technology from FlatFrog Laboratories.
FlatFrog Laboratories AB has developed a patented optical in-glass technology that supports multi-touch sensing and can assess how hard someone is touching, based on the spreading of contact surface area. FlatFrog Touch supports up to 40 simultaneous touches with pressure detection and the technology is expected to have applications in mainstream consumer electronics as well as in digital signage, education, automotive, gaming and medical displays.
FlatFrog Touch uses in-glass infrared light, which is injected into the screen and detected along the edges. IR light information collected at multiple sensors at the edge of the screen can not only detect the precise location of touches but also provide up to 10 bits of touch pressure resolution. The system can track multiple touches and gestures and works with multiple objects including gloved hands or a stylus.
Although optimised to support Microsoft Windows 8.1, the DA8901 is also suitable for use with Android-based touch-enabled operating systems.
DA8901 comes in a 5.7x5.0mm QFN package and is suitable for mounting alongside infrared LED emitter and receiver components on a narrow printed circuit board.
