At this week's ITU Telecom World 2013 held in Bangkok, delegates and regulators from member countries discuss ways to embrace ICT and stimulate economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

The event's central topics of discussion include changes in the way people communicate with each other, the need for new business models in a data-centric era, shifting industry dynamics, changes in technology and the need for new regulatory and standardisation approaches.

China Mobile President and CEO Yue Li said during the opening ceremony, "By 2016 the global ICT market will exceed $500 billion, and for the Chinese market it will be more than $631 billion, creating a whole brand new opportunity for the telecom industry." Outlining his vision for making this a reality, he added, "We believe there are three major characteristics for this opportunity: smart devices, the cloud computing platform and a 4G-based mobile broadband network."

Thailand's ICT Minister Group Captain Anudith Nakornthap said the his government plans to spend at least $125,000 to expand nationwide broadband coverage and cut international bandwidth costs by half with the aim of promoting Thailand as an ICT hub of the Greater Mekong subregion.
