Keywords:licensing? Arduino? DIY?

The Arduino has exploded in the DIY community. Everyone knows the name, almost everyone has one, and tons of projects are made with them every day. One of the reasons Arduino does so well is because of its massive community whose members have produced detailed tutorials and documentation to help you get any project done you can think of.

Now, Arduino has announced that they are beginning a licensing programme to allow products developed within the Arduino ecosystem to carry its logo and receive its support. Called "Arduino at Heart," it allows people to be part of the Arduino community officially, receiving support and promotion from Arduino.

Several companies have already signed up, such as littleBits Electronics, Smart Citizen, Bare Conductive, Aesthetic Studio, Primo.io, and EarthMake. By being completely Arduino-compatible and Arduino-branded they will benefit from having this entire community supporting their products immediately. The tutorials and existing projects concerning Arduino will help people to use these compatible new products fully.

From the press release:

Ayah Bdeir, founder/CEO of littleBits, said: "littleBits is thrilled to be a part of the new Arduino@Heart programme. An Arduino littleBits module has been a popular request for quite a while, and we are huge fans of the Arduino ecosystem and community. The littleBits Arduino module will simultaneously increase the power of the littleBits library by adding programming capabilities and make the Arduino environment easier to get involved in by eliminating the need for soldering or wiring. We can't wait to see what people with make with it!"

There is a financial requirement of a maximum of 5% of the wholesale price. They also mention that Arduino clones, or development boards that are basically just copies of the Arduino, are not allowed in the programme.

Microcontrollers supported by Arduino at Heart:

  • ATMega328 clocked at 8 or 16MHz
  • ATMega1280 clocked at 16MHz
  • ATMega2560 clocked at 16MHz
  • ATMega32U4 clocked at 16MHz
  • SAM3X
