PNI Sensor has unleashed what it says is the highest-performance geomagnetic sensor in its class.

Leveraging its extensive experience in geomagnetic sensing for mission-critical applications, the RM3100 claims to deliver industrial-grade precision and reliability for applications requiring a high degree of orientation accuracy. Providing accurate measurement of signals that are less than 10nT, which is less than 0.1 percent of Earth's magnetic field, the device is intended for applications that require absolute heading or orientation data, including augmented reality and location tracking, added the firm.

According to PNI, the RM3100 delivers more than 20x higher performance than existing micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) or Hall Effect sensors. In addition, the RM3100 boasts improvements in gain, resolution and power consumption with the added flexibility of both SPI and I2C interfaces. It relies on PNI's proprietary technology to provide over 23 times better resolution and 27 times less noise than commonly used Hall Effect magnetic sensors. These are critical attributes for accurate absolute orientation in a wide variety of applications using sensor data.

The RM3100 is now available.
