Tektronix boosts data analysis segment with PPL buy

Tektronix has acquired Picosecond Pulse Labs to strengthen its device offerings in its data analysis segment. Clients of such products include manufacturers and users of fibre-optical broadband data communication equipment.
Tektronix already acted as a reseller of PPL slightly modified instruments under its own brand. PPL manufactured multi-channel pulse generators necessary to survey the capacity and quality of fibre-optical data networking, said Dean Miles, Technical Marketing Manager of Tektronix Europe. The acquisition enables the measurement company to further develop these products and associated technologies.
Privately held Picosecond Pulse Labs was founded 35 years ago by Dr. Jim Andrews as a break-away of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) predecessor, the Bureau of Standards. Its expertise lies in the field of extremely fast time-domain pulsed signal generators. With the acquisition, Tektronix gains control over the PPL's entire intellectual property. The acquisition includes all PLL acquisition and staff. No details as to the price for the acquisition were given.
