Althen sensors measure contactless torque

Althen has launched a series of torque sensors that can detect acoustic surface waves. The sensors use the TorqSense technology from UK-based Sensor Technology.

TorqSense makes use of a ceramic substrate that is excited at a certain frequency. This frequency is in sync with the torque, enabling changes to be processed and detected with precision. The output signa-a current, voltage, RS232 or USB signal-is transferred contactless from the rotating shaft to the receiver. Thus, the complex and failure-prone installation of strain gauges may be dropped.

Another TorqSense advantage is the offering of a significantly lower signal noise than strain gauge, which typically use collector rings for signal transmission. TorqSense offers a measurement range from 1Nm to 13Nm, and is usable at rotational speeds up to 30rpm.

First applications have been installed in fields like power measurement of motors and testing of pumps of various sizes. In other applications the torque measurement is used to draw conclusions to other physical values. For instance, it is used in research labs where the viscosity of substances is determined by means of stirrers, with a torque sensor attached to the stirrer shaft. Other application fields range from torque measurements at underwater turbines to the safe screw connection of medicine bottles.
