Linear Technology Corporation has launched a supercapacitor charger that features active capacitor balancing for 1 or 2 series.

The LTC3128 has an input current limit programmable up to 3A with 2 per cent accuracy, preventing power source overload while minimising capacitor recharge time. Its active charge balancing capability eliminates dissipative external ballast resistors, which warrants balanced operation and less frequent recharge cycles.

The charger is equipped with a programmable maximum capacitor voltage clamp that monitors and enforces the voltage across each capacitor in the series stack. The low noise buck-boost topology allows charging of the output supercapacitor, regardless of the input. In addition, the low-RDS(on), low gate charge synchronous switches provide conversion to cut the charging time of storage elements. The company emphasized that this combination of features is ideal for safely charging and protecting large capacitors in backup power applications.

The charger's input current limit and maximum capacitor voltage are each programmed using a single resistor. Average input current is controlled over a 0.5A to 3A programming range, and the individual maximum capacitor voltage can be set from 1.6V to 3.0V. Other features include The charger comes in thermally enhanced 4mmx5mm QFN and 24-lead TSSOP packages, operating at a temperature range of -40 to 125. Prices start at $3.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
