Fujitsu-Imec partnership yields wireless transceiver tech

A collaborative effort between Fujitsu Laboratories and Imec Holst Centre have resulted in the development of a wireless transceiver circuit that adheres to the 400MHz international band standard, for use in body area networks (BAN) in medical applications.

Aside from the IEEE 802.15.6 compliant BAN standard, the project's specifications include support for two independent modes: a 4.5Mbit/s high-speed mode capable of transmitting brainwaves, images, and other data needed in medicine, and an 11.7kbit/s low-speed, low-power mode for low-power operations when sensor nodes are on standby.

In BAN applications, a wireless network of sensors is placed on the patient's body to collect patient-monitoring data. The various sensor nodes require battery power, and extended battery run-time consequently to minimise the frequency of battery replacement or recharging, making the system as convenient as possible for both patients and medical practitioners.

In order to implement such, Fujitsu and Imec simplified the architecture of the transceiver circuit as much as possible, reducing the electric power requirements of wireless transceiver front-ends to 1.6mW when receiving data and 1.8mW when transmitting. This extended the battery life of conventional sensor products used for patient monitoring by approximately ten-fold.

The digitally controlled transceiver circuit uses a programmable structure that can change its circuitry characteristics to support different phase and frequency modulation methods in adherence to BAN international standards. The receiver consists of a low-noise amplifier, mixer, low-pass filter, and AD converter, and uses a direct-conversion technique that extracts the base band signal directly from the incoming wireless signal.
