Altera Corporation has released a scalable microwave backhaul solution, optimising Escape Communications' QAM modem IP cores for SoC FPGAs operating at bandwidths up to 1GHz and modulation types from QPSK to 4096 QAM. It provides at least 5Gbit/s throughput over a 1GHz link.

The backhaul solution meets individual link capacity requirements between cell sites and the core network, allowing mobile operators to maximise throughput capacity and spectrum efficiency. It targets the 6GHz to 42GHz markets, and applications in the E-band and V-band all-outdoor radio markets.

When combined with Altera's carrier-grade Ethernet switch IP, the solution accelerates the performance of traditional microwave backhaul architectures. This enables robust QoS switch operation along with adaptive coding and modulation and several LTE features, including carrier aggregation and support for frequency and timing synchronisation compliance.

According to the Altera, it is currently working with Escape to optimise the modem IP cores for its next-generation Arria 10 FPGAs and SoCs, targeting applications in wireless base stations, mobile backhaul and remote radio head designs.

The microwave backhaul modem solution is available as a turnkey hardware and software solution for customer evaluation.
