POF-based sensor measures strain

Keywords:sensor? POF? meander path?

AMS Technologies has designed a strain sensor solution using polymer optical fibres (POF) for industrial applications.

Called the "meander path" array, the POF facilitates the creation multiple loops within a confined area from a single fibre. When strained, the loops modify the phase of an optical signal injected into the fibre.

Surrounding the meander path, a separate reference loop that is not strained aids in comparing the reference signal to the strained signal. The difference in phase between the two signals can be converted into the strain measurement. The reference fibre simultaneously provides temperature compensation. Since the sensing array only contains optical fibres, it is immune to EMI and EMC related interference and is completely electrically isolated from the rest of the system
